  • The archaeological site from Cârlomănești, Vernești commune

The archaeological site of Cârlomăneşti is located about 13 km northwest of the municipality of Buzău, on the outskirts of the village of Cârlomăneşti and partly in the village.

The site has two distinct units that form a single ensemble, located on the high terrace in the area of the confluence of the Nișcov and Buzău rivers. In the western part, where the village of Cârlomănești also lies, there is the terrace called Arman by the villagers. From this emerged a small promontory with steep sides on all sides, called Cetățuia by the locals, where important remains from the Bronze Age and the second Iron Age were discovered and researched.

Archaeological research began in 1967 and continued, with some interruptions, until today.

In the period that corresponds to the reign of Burebista (1st century BC), the settlement from Cârlomănești experienced a great development, becoming an important dava - political, economic and religious center for the Geto-Dacian communities in the Buzău valley. Archaeological excavations have revealed large public edifices, domestic constructions (outbuildings, hearths, pits). The archaeological material discovered is extremely rich and consists of: ceramics, tools, utensils, weapons, ornaments, pieces of harness, a silver monetary hoard and a unique lot in the Geto-Dacian world of zoomorphic and anthropomorphic statuettes.

In the Arman sector, a vast burial space was identified, in which 143 graves were investigated, chronologically covering the entire period of evolution of the Monteoru culture, from the Bronze Age. The cemetery is spectacular due to the complexity of the funerary constructions, the specific funeral ritual and the richness of the inventories.
